What Child Is This

~William C. Dix

1. What Child is this who, laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

2. Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

3. So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come peasant, king to own Him;
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Raise, raise a song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

To further dwell in Christmas songs, I’ve chosen What Child Is This, as it retells the Gospel story.  Written by William C. Dix while he recovered from a months long mysterious illness when he was 26 years old.  Click on the link for a beautiful rendition of this Christmas hymn.  Sweet music to your ears!

  1. It is a miracle how Christmas hymns continue to minister to us today! If we could only dwell on them…their words could become real to us once again. 🙂

    Our grandson is 20 today. He has been let down by his father and many others and has lost all belief. His mother is faithful, please pray that this Christmas will open his eyes. He’s a precious gift. Thank the Lord that He never lets us down.

    One of my favourite songs.
